As advocates, we can provide the following services for families:
We do not provide the following services:
- Collaborate with the child’s team to develop an appropriate educational plan.
- Build parental capacity to advocate without our ongoing support.
- Guide parents through a confusing maze of procedures, policies and laws.
- Provide guidance on short, medium and long-term plans.
- Connect parents to other necessary supports - educational, psychological, medical or other.
- Create systems surrounding documentation and communication.
- Establish procedures that allow for consistency between home and school.
- Interpret evaluation reports and advocate for implementation of their suggestions so that the services provided by the school lead to meaningful and appropriate outcomes.
- Provide professional development to teachers and schools on topics pertinent to specific disabilities.
- Determine the reason behind certain behaviors and develop plans for the reduction of these behaviors.
- Assist schools and families in moving from conflict to collaboration
We do not provide the following services:
- Represent the child or family at school meetings or legal proceedings. We are happy to attend and participate in school related meetings, however, we are not attorneys and we cannot represent the child or family.
- We have existing relationships with some schools, school leaders and teachers. In some cases, this may limit our ability to work with you as an advocate. We never want to create a real or perceived conflict of interest.
